Former media aide to the Ministers of Interior and Works, Comrade Salihu Dantata Mahmud, has raised concerns over the growing rate of route violations by motorcycles, tricycles, and the increasing presence of rickety vehicles within the Abuja city centre.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with select journalists, Dantata lamented that some criminal elements now exploit motorcycles to carry out robberies around areas such as Obasanjo Estate Junction in Area 11, Garki Hospital Junction, and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory, especially at night.
According to him, although the ministerial task force has been making efforts to address the situation, inadequate manpower remains a major challenge affecting effective enforcement across the city.
Dantata commended the efforts of the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Sanusi, and the Director of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), Abubakar Yaldu, for their commitment towards improving traffic management and public safety in the capital city.
He noted that previous operational strategies by DRTS officers stationed on roads significantly helped in curbing traffic-related offenses and restoring order on major routes within Abuja.
While acknowledging complaints of misconduct against some officers in the past, Dantata stressed that such actions should not be used to judge the entire agency. He advised the Transportation Secretariat to focus on proper retraining of operational personnel, particularly on professionalism, public relations, and civil conduct while dealing with residents.
He further praised the DRTS leadership under Yaldu for making vehicle number plates more accessible to residents and appealed to the FCT Minister to increase funding and logistical support for the agency to enhance its operations and restore sanity on Abuja roads.
