Crisis in NDP As Financial Secretary Threatens Resignation Over Alleged Forged Constitution

The newly registered National Democratic Party (NDP) may be starting on a controversial note as its National Financial Secretary, Darlington Onyebuchi Agoha, has accused the party’s National Chairman of submitting a forged constitution to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Aggrieved Agoha, in an official statement addressed to journalists, disclosed that he had formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of what he described as a “grave constitutional breach” following the Federal High Court judgment that ordered the party’s registration.

According to him, the version of the party constitution allegedly submitted to INEC contains controversial “Life-Chairman” clauses and provisions that strip the National Working Committee (NWC) of its powers. He argued that such alterations amount to a direct violation of the 1999 Constitution and undermine internal party democracy.

The agrived financial secretary said he has already written to INEC to alert the commission to the alleged forgery. He attached proof of service, including a copy of a letter stamped as received by INEC on February 26, 2026.

Agoha issued a strong warning to the electoral body, stating that he would immediately resign his position if INEC proceeds to issue a certificate of registration based on what he insists is a falsified document.

“If INEC issues a certificate based on this forged document, I will immediately resign my position,” he declared.

The development signals a deepening leadership tussle within the NDP, coming shortly after the party secured a favourable court judgment paving the way for its registration.

Efforts to reach the National Chairman of the party for comments were not immediately successful as of press time. INEC has also yet to publicly respond to the allegations.

Political observers say the controversy, if not swiftly resolved, could affect the credibility and stability of the fledgling party at a critical stage in its formation.

Agoha, who says he is available for further clarification, described the matter as a constitutional crisis that requires urgent intervention to protect the integrity of the party and Nigeria’s democratic framework.
