Hon. Kalu Deputy Speaker’s Law School Attendance Under Scrutiny

A high-stakes investigation is underway, targeting the law school attendance and NYSC discharge certificate of Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. The National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) and the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) have been petitioned by Public Interest Advocate, Darlington Onyebuchi Agoha, to probe alleged discrepancies in Kalu’s documents.

Agoha’s said hes  concerned over a possible overlap between Kalu’s mandatory National Service (March 2010 – March 2011) and his full-time Law School attendance (April 2010 – July 2011). Official records suggest this overlap raises questions about statutory integrity, as Nigerian law requires strict adherence to rules, including the 70% attendance mandate of the Council of Legal Education.

“This is not about politics; it’s about accountability and probity,” Agoha emphasized. “We demand a thorough investigation to ensure fairness, equity, and transparency.”

The LPDC and NYSC have been tasked with verifying Kalu’s documents and determining whether any rules were breached. If the allegations are substantiated, it could have significant implications for Kalu’s position as Deputy Speaker.

Agoha clarified he never supported a 2023 High Court suit seeking to change Kalu’s name, deeming it a “frivolous distraction.” Instead, he focuses on the more serious concern of alleged overlap, seeking to uphold Nigerian law and institutions.

The investigation’s outcome is eagerly awaited, with many watching closely to see if Nigeria’s leaders will be held accountable for alleged breaches of statutory integrity.
