NSCDC Inclusion advocates, trains over 250 personnel on basic sign language

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence   (  NSCDC  ) Corps has , FCT  Command  trained over 250 personnel on Basic Sign Language. The graduation ceremony held  in Abuja at the command Headquarter

The Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disability (NCPWD) Hon. Ayuba Gufwan applauded the FCT Commandant for his commitment toward promoting inclusion protection for persons with disability in Nigeria. Gufwan says this act of gesture it’s the first of its kind and significantly worth calling the FCT Commandant Dr. Olusola Odumosu as ( OO1 Inclusion Protection Advocate).

According to Gufwan,
” Inclusion in security must not stop at communication alone. I use this opportunity to respectfully call on the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to employ trained deaf individuals to the corps as well as give full effect to the 5% employment quota for Persons with Disabilities in your organization which is stipulated in the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018 and also captioned in the Public Service Rules (Revised 2021)”.

The Commission is committed to supporting NSCDC and all other security agencies with technical assistance, capacity building and strategic partnerships to strengthen the inclusion agenda. We are confident that the Corps can set a national example in upholding the values of accessibility, representation and fairness says Gufwan.

Delivery his speech, Dr. Olusola Odumosu the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps FCT Command said,

“I have always emphasized that capacity building is the cornerstone of modern and responsive security services delivery. The various training and retraining initiatives are the milestones achieved in the last two years and all part of our deliberate strategy to build a resilient, professional and security outfits, one that can respond to the evolving needs of our society”.

The FCT Commandant congratulates the personnels for completing this vital training, it marks dedication and perseverance but also a pivotal moment in advancing inclusive security within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). By acquiring this skills, you are equipped to bridge communication gaps and ensure that every citizen, regardless of their ability in all the six (6) Area Councils of the FCT to feel a sense of safety and belonging so that no one is left behind”.

He added that, inclusion is at the heart of effective security and by learning Sign Language, you have made a vital commitment to ensuring that the voices of the deaf and hard of hearing are heard and understood and today we have trained over 250 personnel on Basic Sign Language to understand and communicate with the Deaf community says Olusola.
The impact of this programme goes far beyond communication. It has restored trust, affirmed dignity, and created a bridge that many thought was impossible.

The Founder Deaf-In Tech Dr Arowolo Ayoola in his remarks says,
” What the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, particularly the FCT Command has done with this Basic Sign Language Training is nothing short of historic. It is the first time in Nigeria that a security agency has made such a bold and structured effort to bridge the gap between state protection and a community that has long been invisible in the eyes of the system”.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates to graduates, who pledged to actively support the enforcement of the law and promote accessibility and inclusion in their respective domains.

The Commission and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence reinstated their commitment to protect and promote the right of citizen by providing equal opportunity for all to thrive.
