Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe Dies in Bandits’ Captivity in Katsina

The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, who died while in the custody of bandits that abducted him two weeks ago. According to the government, the former military officer succumbed to health complications related to diabetes and hypertension during his captivity, bringing a tragic end to efforts aimed at securing his freedom.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, the government expressed deep sorrow over the loss. He noted that despite sustained efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure the retired general’s release, the operation unfortunately ended in tragedy. The government described his death as a painful loss to his family, Katsina State, and the nation at large.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the bereaved family and residents of the state, describing the incident as a dark chapter in Katsina’s fight against insecurity. He emphasized the need for greater collaboration among security stakeholders to confront banditry and other criminal activities threatening communities across the state and beyond.

Major General Abubakar and his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, were kidnapped on May 30, 2026, near Zakin Baure village in Matazu Local Government Area after suspected bandits attacked their vehicle. Their driver survived the incident despite sustaining gunshot wounds. The late general served as Director of Defence Information and was one of the Nigerian military’s chief spokespersons between 2015 and 2017.

The death of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe in bandits’ captivity has renewed concerns over insecurity in Nigeria. Authorities have pledged to intensify efforts to bring those responsible to justice and strengthen the fight against banditry.
