FG Launches Digital Switch-Over, Unveils FreeTV Platform for Nigerians With Job Opportunities.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the long-awaited Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme and unveiled the FreeTV platform, a new digital broadcasting service that will provide Nigerian households with access to over 100 free-to-air television channels without any monthly subscription fees. The launch, which took place in Abuja, marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris described the initiative as a new dawn for the country’s broadcasting industry. He said the Digital Switch-Over would improve television viewing quality, enhance audience measurement, support advertisers, and create greater opportunities for broadcasters and viewers across Nigeria.

The Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Charles Ebuebu, noted that the platform is designed to align with emerging technologies and modern viewing habits. He disclosed that the service will launch with about 100 channels and that regional production studios have been established across the country to support content creators and encourage local content development beyond major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Kano.

Also speaking at the launch, Jane Egerton-Idehen, Managing Director of NigComSat, emphasized the importance of reliable technology and uninterrupted service delivery. She revealed that plans are underway to launch additional satellites that will strengthen coverage, improve broadcasting services, and support the continued growth of Nigeria’s digital communications infrastructure.

Stakeholders at the event highlighted the economic benefits of the Digital Switch-Over programme, noting that it is expected to create thousands of jobs, boost the creative industry, expand opportunities for content creators, and give Nigerian productions greater visibility across the country and beyond. The initiative is also expected to stimulate investment in the media and entertainment sector while ensuring that millions of Nigerians enjoy quality television services at no additional monthly cost.

Also speaking at the launching Deputy   Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu described the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting as a bold step toward modernizing Nigeria’s media landscape and expanding access to quality information. He commended the federal government and the National Broadcasting Commission for driving the process, noting that digital migration would improve picture and sound quality, increase channel options, and create new jobs in content production, technology, and advertising.

 

 

Kalu urged Nigerians to embrace the change and called on stakeholders to ensure the set-top boxes remain affordable so no community is left behind. He added that a strong digital broadcasting system would not only deepen democracy by giving citizens more diverse voices, but also strengthen national unity and security through better public communicatΠion during emergencies.
