NiMet Secures ISO 9001:2015 Certification for Aeronautical Services at Three More Airports

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has expanded its Quality Management System (QMS) certification after securing the ISO 9001:2015 standard for the provision of aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports.

The certification followed a successful third-party audit conducted by Certech Inc., Canada, from July 20 to 23, 2026, which confirmed that NiMet’s products and services met the international quality management requirements for aviation meteorological operations.

The achievement comes on the heels of a directive by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, urging NiMet to strengthen compliance with global safety standards and improve Nigeria’s ratings with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The latest certification brings to eight the number of Nigerian airports where NiMet’s aeronautical meteorological services are certified under the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System.

The agency was also successfully recertified at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa. The certification remains valid for three years, subject to annual surveillance and maintenance audits, with the next recertification scheduled for 2029.

In a letter dated July 26, 2026, Certech’s Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, confirmed that NiMet had successfully met all audit objectives, noting that its Quality Management System conforms to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry.

Reacting to the milestone, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Charles Anosike, described the certification as a significant achievement, particularly as it marked the first ISO audit for the agency’s aeronautical meteorological products and services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports. He commended the agency’s Quality Management System team, led by Rotimi Adenubi, for their commitment and assured that management would continue to improve operational standards across all NiMet locations nationwide.
